A smoothie is a drink made from pureed raw fruit and/or vegetables, typically using a blender. A smoothie often has a liquid base such as water, fruit juice, plant milk, and sometimes dairy products ( milk, yogurt, ice-cream or cottage cheese ).
OK, now we know what we are dealing with, weight loss smoothie recipes, and next is to plan out the ingredients.
I have found smoothies to be a great substitute for meals and snacks. They can be as varied as your imagination. The only constraints that you would face, have to do with your dietary preferences. You can easily create your own weight loss smoothie recipes.
My opinion is that all great smoothies start with a blender. My personal favorite is a Vitamix Blender.
There are a number of different models, but I have found that any Vitamix that I have used, works perfectly for creating either my meal or snack smoothie.
Meal smoothies should have a mix of fiber, protein, and fat blend. These are called macro-nutrients to keep you full. A fruit or green smoothie would not last long and you would be hungry in a short period.
Snack smoothies are lower in calories and not as nutrient-dense as meal smoothies. These smoothies are generally light and refreshing, meant to give you a quick burst of energy. Be sure to sneak in some extra greens and superfoods for an added pop to your smoothie.
Weight Loss Smoothie Blends
Green Smoothie – This smoothie is an organic spinach based drink. You will find that I am very creative when it comes to making my smoothies. In most cases, it is a matter of what I have on hand to use. I do try to keep certain key ingredients on hand at all times for my creations. These ingredients will always include almond milk, organic spinach, frozen fruit (your choice to what you use), fresh ginger, bananas, Chia seeds, and ground flaxseed. Here are the components for a green smoothie:
2 cups of organic spinach
1” peeled fresh ginger
1 cup of frozen fruit
2 cups almond milk(soy milk or milk)
Tbsp of Chia seeds
Tbsp of Ground Flaxseed
I place all this in my Vitamix and turn it on high and liquefy all the components. You can alter the mix to meet your taste buds
Strawberry/Banana Smoothie – If I am looking for a quick pick me up, this is my go to smoothie.
2 cup of frozen strawberries
2 cups almond milk
1 hand full of greens
1 tbsp of Chia seeds
1 tbsp of ground flax seed
Place the ingredients in your blender and run on high until you have the consistency that you want.
Detox Smoothie – If you want to flush the system, the ingredients in this smoothie should help you gain some regularity.
1 med Green Apple
½ cup pineapple
1” fresh peeled ginger
1 cup of organic spinach
½ cup of fresh cilantro
Place in your blender and run on high until you have a smooth drink
Citrus Smoothie – This drink is pretty much what it sounds like, plenty of citrus in the blender
1 Orange, peeled and quartered
1 Lemon, peeled and quartered
1 Hand full of Organic Spinach
2 Carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
2 cups Almond Milk
1 Peach, peeled and quartered
Place all the ingredients in your blender, turn on high and blend until smooth
Kale/Fruit Smoothie – This is another power smoothie for a quick pick up when your energy level needs a boost.
2 cups of Organic Kale
½ cup Pineapple
1 tbsp Natural Honey
2 tbsp Greek Yogurt
2 tbsp Creamy Peanut Butter
1 cup Almond Milk
Place all the ingredients in a blender, run on high until smooth.
I have found myself interchanging ingredients in all these smoothies, depending on my taste preferences on that particular day.
You can also turn these smoothies into a meal substitute by adding a couple of tablespoons of whey protein to your smoothie. I do this many times. I add the protein, Chia seeds, and ground flaxseed to my smoothies and have this for a quick meal replacement.
You really are only limited by your own imagination when making smoothies. The key is acquired a good blender, and as I have stated, nothing beats my Vitamix.
